What’s one thing we’ve engaged in since the dawn of humankind? Looking up at the stars.
Stargazing is, in essence, taking part in an ancient ritual, connecting us to our ancestors. Looking up at the tapestry of a night sky connects us with all of humanity, past and present, and therefore, can create all the difference in ourselves and the world.
Embark on an extraordinary journey through the cosmos at our highly anticipated Stargazing event, taking place on the weekend before Earth Day, April 20th, from 6 PM to 11 PM! Partnering with the esteemed University of Tennessee Physics Department, we invite you to join us for an evening of celestial exploration and wonder.
Attendees will have the chance to witness nature’s celestial fireworks with the possibility of sightings from both the Eta Aquarid and Lyrid meteor showers.
From Space.com: “The upcoming Eta Aquarid meteor shower, will be active between April 15 and May 27, with its peak on the night of May 4 and predawn hours of May 5. The Lyrid meteor shower, which occurs between April 16-25 every year and will next peak on the night of April 22, 2024.”
While sightings cannot be guaranteed, attendees will have the opportunity to delve into the mysteries of the night sky and explore the cosmos. Graduate students from the Physics Department will be available to provide engaging talks on various astronomical phenomena.
Enhance your stargazing comfort by bringing along a quilt or outdoor seating to sit upon while we gaze upon the night sky’s breathtaking beauty.
Marble Springs’ open green spaces will provide the perfect setting for this memorable night, away from the lights of downtown, ensuring an enchanting stargazing experience.
Admission is free, but RSVPs on Zeffy are encouraged. Bring your own telescope or cozy up with a lawn chair for an unforgettable evening of cosmic exploration.
